Kamen Kalev was born on June 8, 1975 in Burgas, Bulgaria. Studied at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia. His student films ORPHEE and MALTONIUS OLBREN received awards at many international film festivals, including Berlin, Clermont-Ferrand and Locarno. His short GET THE RABBIT BACK (co-directed with Dimitar Mitovski) was in competition in Cannes in 2005. Two years later, his last short RABBIT TROUBLES (also co-directed with Mitovski) was again selected by the Critics' Week. Last year, Kamen's feature debut EASTERN PLAYS - which he also wrote and produced - had its world premiere in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and went on to win prizes at many festivals, including Angers, Estoril, Warsaw, Sofia, Sarajevo, and Tokyo. Recently, he produced his second feature THE ISLAND which again was co-produced by Sweden's Chimney Pot.
