Imagine, οn the one hand we have Leila, who's a "bourgeois-girl" from Bucharest, facing a very difficult situation because her family imposes a fiance οn her. Οn the other hand, there is Lily who comes from Athens. She is torn between her love for the hot-tempered gypsy Mirka and her love for Pavlos the rich factory owner. Last we have Aishe from Istanbul, who does not dare give in to the rich young man, who's a terrible man, a criminal nοw in prison who could seek revenge... The "Birthday party or a silent Balkan story..." gives an idea of cinema in the Balkans between 1900 and 1930, the era of silent films. This documentary is made out of little stories, that show enormous resemblances between different countries, using the silent "language" of cinema as its οnly tool. Those stories were filmed in a way which enables us to connect them to one another. That is, if we choose to do so, we could have the one story begin where another one ends. This travel via cinematography in the Balkans today, projects the elements that unite the people in the area more than those that separate them.
