Ariadne Lives in Leros

Synopsis:

Ariadne, a young married woman leaves her husband and daughter and embarks on a search for answers to the questions that have been tormenting her since childhood when she witnessed her father's arrest for her mother's murder. Her search takes her to the notorious mental asylum on the island of Leros where her father is incarcerated. Against the background of the performance of the myth of Theseus and Ariadne put on by the inmates, the ball of thread will begin to unravel. Little by little her anguish will begin to take shape. The signs of the riddles she must solve will emerge like some magical images. Riddles that are a legacy of parental sin. The circle will close and reopen and will bring the solution to the drama or a deadlock? Thanassis Rakitzis has chosen to deal with an explosive subject by submerging himself in the island of his heroine's soul. With her he explores the inner country, searching for answers in the world of things that are unseen in a sort of reverse "cinema verite" where the image merely alludes but never proves.
