Eyewitness

Synopsis:

Petros is a solitary and eccentric character who has dreams in which a horrifying murder is committed. He discovers that the crime has actually taken place and it is the third successive unsolved murder to shatter the city's calm... He finds out that the murderer he sees in his dreams is in fact Simos, a junk collector, living beyond the pale of society. Petros is obsessed by Anna with whom he has been madly in love for years. But the feeling isn't mutual and Anna resists his advances. In fact, not only does she reject him but she does so in the most offensive way, forbidding him any form of contact with her. The accumulated tension of recent events leads him to embark upon a rash plan. He decides to kill Anna in the belief that in this way he will free himself of his obsession. He exploits the fact that as a result of his dreams, he is the only one who knows about Simos and the way in which he kills his victims. He goes to the police and claims that he is an eyewitness to Anna's murder. As a result of the evidence he gives Simos is arrested. In the course of the trial, however, his testimony, on which Simos' conviction rests, is overturned. In the ensuing attempt to do away with each other, Petros emerges the final victor. Now he feels he has settled all the pending matters of his past and is free to fall in love with a girl who is a substitute for Anna. He feels he is master of the game. Off his guard, he pays no attention to a new dream he has and cannot interpret it as the precursor of his own death, that comes as divine justice. "This affair has gone beyond the bounds of human justice," says Simos' attorney when he discovers that Petros has committed the perfect crime.
